She won several awards for fiction and poetry throughout her life. Abernathy's purpose for this award was to enrich religious thought through the discipline of literature.
The Abernathy Scholarship is awarded each spring to a student who writes the best article, story, play, or poem with religious overtones.
The winner will be chosen by the chairperson of the Department of English.
